Donita Brown is a Rule 31 Listed Civil Mediator and focuses on two areas of practice – civil cases in Robertson County and information technology disputes. Donita uses her information technology background and expertise to help her clients with their technology disputes. Donita has led large system implementations and integrations as a project director and has also participated as a team member. She has also worked within telecommunication integrators for the Federal and State Governments and the telecommunication departments of Fortune 500 companies, understanding the complexity of telecommunication industry, both wired and wireless. Donita has experience in many information technology facets and understands the information technology terminology used in the field. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Belmont University that, coupled with her B.B.A in Accounting from Austin Peay State University, allows her to fully understand the business impacts of technology decisions and disputes.
What is in your mediator tool kit? What is your favorite or most used tool?
My favorite tool is the “what would you do if you could not agree” phrase. It tends to bring the parties back to the problem and help them focus on coming to an agreement.
If you were a superhero/mediator what would be your name and slogan?
If I were a superhero, I would be “The Mirror” and use my mediation skills to help people see only their best qualities, moving each party closer to an agreement.
What is your pet peeve?
My pet peeve is when someone says, “I don’t have time…” We all have the same 24 hours in a day; it’s up to each person to decide how and what to do with those hours.
Are you married/do you have kids/pets etc?
I am married to a fantastic man, Robert. We’ve been married for nine years and have a fifteen-month-old beautiful baby girl named Amelia and a nine-year-old poodle, Toes.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy hiking and running. Middle Tennessee has so many great places to hike, so typically on the weekends you can find me at either Radnor Lake or one of the Warner Parks hiking. I’m also training for a half marathon and enjoy competing in 5k races.
Why did you become a mediator?
While working towards completion of my Masters degree at Belmont, I had the opportunity to take a negotiation class, based in the Harvard Negotiation Program on Mutual Gains, which completely changed my view of the world and my career path. After taking a couple of negotiation classes, Belmont offered a Mediation class as a follow up, and I was hooked! I really enjoy helping two parties come to a solution.

Failure.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
LeConte Lodge. LeConte Lodge is a hike-up lodge on top of a beautiful mountain in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I take a yearly trip with my husband, family and friends, and it is magical.

Where are you from, and how did you end up in Nashville?
I am from Springfield, TN and have lived in the Robertson County area my entire life.

I really try to live my life with no regrets and, so far, have none! So, yes, I’d choose the same career path. I am living my dream.
