MEDIATION MONTH
AUGUST 2009
Tiffany Cox, Deputy Director of the Tennessee Human Rights Commission is conducting the first ever Mediation Month in August 2009.
The Tennessee Human Rights Commission is an independent state agency charged with eradicating discrimination based on race, color, national origin, gender, religion, creed, age and disability in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The agency investigates over 500 complaints of discrimination annually. To assist in resolving some of these cases, the THRC is planning to have a Mediation Month during August 2009 in which it will offer mediation to the parties in some of these employment discrimination cases.
The Commission is seeking mediators who are Rule 31 listed/certified to volunteer for this event. All mediators would be required to sign a mediator agreement and to attend a brief (approximately 2 hour) orientation, tentatively scheduled for July, about the Commission's mediation program and procedures. Mediators would also be responsible for scheduling (time and location) the mediations. The Commission could provide assistance with securing a location if necessary.
They have partnered with the Nashville Conflict Resolution Center here in Nashville, with the Community Mediation Center in Knoxville and hope to gain some additional volunteers in middle Tennessee and in west Tennessee, specifically Memphis.
If this sounds like an event that you are interested in participating in please contact Doris Brocker sumnermediation@aol.com , 615-206-7447
